The floors are almost done! The master closet still needs carpet and shelving ripped out, a coat of paint, and the Rubbermaid FastTrack (similar available here) closet organizer installed. I've used the Rubbermaid closet kits before, but the series I have in my current closet appears to have been discontinued (HomeFree).  I purchased the FastTrack kit at Lowe's, and have pieces left from the old installation that should work.

It is important to note that the shelves and brackets all seem to be cross-compatible, but the hanging rail and the uprights are different. I've been looking at a few accessory options from Closet Maid as well. Again, some of the items are cross-compatible except the hanging rail and uprights. I've concluded that many of the double slot uprights are compatible with a wide range of brands of shelves, brackets and accessories, but it's best to pick one base system (rail and uprights) and build from there. Adding a different brand of rails and uprights later will only cause problems. I'm planning to come back with a whole post about this later, and possibly even a chart.

I'm toying with the idea of starting a closet organizing business. As much as I hate organizing my own crap, I LOVE doing it for other people. I especially enjoy getting paid to organize.

As for the closet in the new house...WHEW! I don't know if the people who built this shit just hate closets or clothes, or other humans in general, but you have to put hangers on the pole backwards. The lip of the shelf blocks the space above the pole, and there's no way to hang items on it without a few curse words slipping out.

I'm leaving an existing dresser in the closet for more storage, so the system will be built around it. It's actually kind of perfect for seasonal items. I don't have a lot of room to pack up sweaters and such for winter, so stashing them in a dresser will free up hanging space and eliminate the need to install drawers.  Most of the drawers I've seen available for closet organizer kits aren't all that great or are too expensive for what you're getting. It will be refinished at some point, but L wants to keep it as is for a while for nostalgia purposes.

Here's the closet...after we'd already cleaned it out enough to shove everything from the bedroom into it so we could get the floors done. I'll bring a picture of it stripped and one of the finished project in th next post.

The closet is 12' x 5' so it's very roomy. I'm going with a neutral off-white on the walls by Valspar called Clay Angel. My monitor makes this color look darker than it actually is, but it's just this side of white with a touch of yellow and gray. It's also going on the trim and cabinets in the bathrooms and will be used to paint the doors throughout the house. I got eggshell for the closet and high gloss for the doors, cabinets, and trim.

I cannot wait for this particular project to be done. I told L I'm NOT moving into the house until the closet is finished. If we don't do it now we'll put it off and I'll be frustrated to say the least.
